A Horse, an Ancient Church and lots of Good Fences

This is a photograph which I took quite a while back.

A beautiful horse, a lovely old church,
and
lots of good fences.

Here's the other side of the church - metal fencing, this time.

The greenstone and chalk church is dedicated to St Leonard
the building is mostly 14th and 15th century
although it is thought to be 10th century in origin.

It is still used occasionally as a place of worship, but the last time I was there it was looking
in dire need of some tender loving care.

The back of the church and the nearby manor house
seen from the top road
with
plenty of wooden fences in between
plus a good length of well maintained hedge.

We don't normally get much snow in this area
so even a sprinkling like this was magical!

ps.  I have just visited the church today 22.9.16.  It is now in a very sorry state, I'll do a post in a few days, when I have sorted through the photographs.

I'm happy to be joining in with  Teresa at The Run A Round Ranch for Good Fences.

    1. Hello MB, I'm so glad you like it. There is a sad/romantic story attached to the church which I'll also write about later in the week.

    1. Hello Christine, It is suffering very badly from damp, such a shame because although it is tiny it does come with an interesting history. No horses, today - just five beautiful black dogs.

  5. Very beautiful photos Elaine!
Love the old church, the horse and the fences too!
It is sad that the church is now in "sorry state". I like so much old buildings.

Thanks so much for your nice comment on my post.
Have a lovely day and weekend too.

    1. Hello Sonia, Thank you, so much. I think you will enjoy the history of the church but that makes it even worse that it has fallen into such a bad state - still, it is a story worth retelling later in the week.

    1. Hello Jedidja, Thank you! I'm not complaining, but we get snow so rarely that it is always a big event - grab a camera and snap away before it melts.

    1. Hi Linda, I often used to pass this church, but because it is set within private land I didn't drive down there to look around it. Then one day they held some event and I learned that it is open to all - never locked - and one has the right to visit it. The horses who used to live there were a beautiful bonus.

    1. Thanks, Ruth. I do love those gentle folds of The Lincolnshire Wolds, they give fence lines so much more interest.

    1. Hi Ida, Whenever I visit I try to feel some of the history of the place and this lovely, crumbling old church has some tales to tell. I hope action is taken to fix the problems before it is too late...as ever, funding is the issue.

    1. Hi Debbie, Thanks for stopping by. I'm glad you found the snow cooling, now if you could just let us have a little more of that 87 degrees we'd both be happy! Have a lovely weekend.
