Rural Wuhan

A few years ago my younger son got married to his beautiful wife, Poppy.     Although she had lived and worked in Shanghai for many years, they had to travel back to rural Wuhan, the place where she was born, to get the official documentation stamped for their Chinese wedding.

This red bed is very much a country bed (rural Wuhan) and although I wouldn't want to sleep in it, I do think it has a real charm about it.

This is 'Poppy', one of my beautiful daughter's-in-law.

Later that year they came back here not only to get their UK documentation sorted out but also because we were hosting a big party to celebrate their wedding.   It was a wonderful day, family and friends came from all over the country and some even travelled from Shanghai.

Poppy wore her gorgeous red Chinese wedding dress and looked very beautiful, though I think she looks just as beautiful without the makeup and wearing one of my aprons.

Shanghai

A year or two later they returned to live over here, in a village four or five miles away from Parsonage Cottage.    They have settled down to a much quieter life than that in Shanghai.

Those seven years have flown past so quickly!

Why have I written this post?  Simply because Wuhan is in the news, China is in the news, everyone has something bad to say about it.

Well, I am delighted to say that my daughter in law is Chinese, she was born in Wuhan, and she has brought much happiness to my family.x

  2. Oh my! I did not recognize the name Wuhan, until you said the 'latest news.'

It is not the place. It is the lack of government health regulations.

She is lovely, and he is handsome. What a beautiful couple.

I am so happy to hear, that they are settled in the U.K. 'Twas not always thus, I remember.

And their beautiful cat must be very happy, to have them home, here, with him. -smile-

    Again, what a beautiful couple.

    1. They are a lovely couple, WoW. Right now they are fully immersed in life over here, but I think that at some point in the future they would like to go back to Shanghai - and, well remembered! Boy, the cat, is happy over here even though he does like to pretend to be a little Chinese Emperor sometimes!

    1. Those years whizz by so quickly, Joanne. I must have been on the old Pear Tree Log blog then, or Bramble Rambles, perhaps. I have had so many blogs that they merge one into the other these days!

  6. A lovely couple, sometimes the news forgets that faraway places are in a real world.

    1. Thank you, Thelma. That was really what this post was about - place names etc get bandied about, dreadful comments made, but these are real people, one of whom happens to have been born in Wuhan.

  7. Must have been quite a change between Shanghai and a rural English village. If she has friends or family in Wuhan I hope they are OK

    1. Thanks, Sue. Poppy had been over here for some extended holidays before they moved into their cottage, but even so, you are right. It was a big change for her to come to a small village next to a small market town in England!

    1. Time is flying past far too quickly for my liking, Lettice! It seems only a short time ago since we were decorating the gardens with paper lanterns and enormous red peonies, bunting and marquees. It was a happy time.

    1. Thanks, Susan, she really is lovely. I often think how utterly delighted my mother would have been at welcoming her into the family and how much she would have enjoyed her delicious Chinese food.

  12. They are such a lovely couple and so good to have them near you. Thoughts and prayers for the people of Wuhan and all over - everyone caught up in this horrible Coronavirus. Hope things are better soon.

    1. Thank you, Molly. I will certainly pass that on to Poppy. It is all too easy to use broad brush strokes and forget that there are real, three-dimensional, people caught up in everything.

  13. You must be very relieved that you son is safely here with you. I do hope Poppy's family continue to be safe and well in Wuhan. Thank goodness for social media and it being so much easier to keep in touch with people on the other side of the world.

    1. Forty years ago when my husband worked away, for months at a time, I was lucky to get a short weekly telephone call, plus the occasional snail-mail letter! So very different these days, thank goodness.

    1. Hello Terra - and welcome! Poppy's red dress is stunning, absolutely perfect on her. The rest of us were dressed up but we all looked rather dull in comparison! So far so good for her family and friends. Thanks, Terra.
