Roasted Fox

So, that was 2018.   No need to review it.   It was what it was.

I am tired after all the family visits, the cooking, the drink making, the jollying things along, happy, but tired.        I am also full of cold - a London cold - courtesy of the London grandchildren, bless them!

I don't really 'do' New Year these days.     Back in my younger days I would party through the night.  I have learnt a modicum of sense since then.

We got to meet our new grandson, Welles, he is a gorgeous little thing.

We shared some enormous family meals, had some very jolly gatherings, yet I think the meal we made using this freshly baked loaf of bread - kneaded with love, for that makes the best bread - was the one which they enjoyed the most.

My second youngest grandchild insisted that his sandwich should be made with roast fox - he is big fan of The Gruffalo - luckily I had some in the fridge.

Simple food, made with love.

    1. Of course he was an organic, free-range, Lincolnshire fox. ;-)

  3. Isn't the back of a babies neck the most scrumptious thing!

I have a Surrey cold which has made me feel really poorly, so many things to clear and tidy and all I've done is lay on settee watching old films on TV.

(Have yet to meet the Gruffalo but will remember to have roast fox in the fridge when I do!)

    1. Sorry to hear that you have a cold too, Sue. I hope you are soon fully restored and fighting fit - meanwhile, listen to your body - and enjoy those old films!!

It was so good to get hold of that little scrap and, I agree, their little necks are totally scrumptious. I hope you got lots of cuddles and loves from your little ones - enough to make catching the cold worth while. Always keep a supply of roast fox in the fridge, it stores well and you never know when you will need it. ;)

  4. Roast fox? ... and there was me thinking I was the only one who liked it!
I don't do New Year either but I wish you a good one.

    1. Isn't it amazing how renaming something can suddenly make it so much more desirable to children. Roast ham was rejected, but when it reappeared as roast fox... Happy New Year Valerie!

  5. How fantastic that you happened to have roast fox on the ready! I am sorry that you got the cold flu, but I do know the hugs and snuggles were worth it. I sometimes find that after the festivities and all have gone, and I take in a deep breath, that my body is accepting of the bittersweet virus that has lingered. I take oregano capsules and that seems to knock the cold down...that and a shot of blackberry brandy with coffee...;) !

Blackberry brandy sounds rather delicious - note to myself: Make some this year!!
Fox sandwiches? No problem. A peek in the fridge and a quick wave of my magic wand was all it took! It was a pleasure to see them enjoyed by the little boy who doesn't normally eat much at all.

  6. Don't know who I caught my cold from. Its only in my lungs and causing me to cough. The visit from NH daughter and family is almost at an end. We've spilt the time with other grandparents who traveled from GA to visit with another son who has moved to MD. Daughter and family are staying with us. One more night to go. They just left for half a day with other grandparents and family. Both girls were crying and I'm not sure why.

You have had a very busy time of it, Marcia. I hope you are feeling a whole lot better now. Oh dear, sounds like those little girls really enjoyed their time with you and don't want to be parted, even for half a day!

  7. Have a quiet and enjoyable new years.
    You definitely need the rest.
We love the gruffalo here too, or did a few years ago. Never got asked for fox sandwiches though. Id be be in a quandary there. No fox in our fridge. A bit of wild pig though. Our grandkids used to eat peacock...I think. Some sort of exotic bird.
Get well quick so you can wander with the dog and tell us all about it

It is very fortunate that fox tastes similar to ham - and thank goodness for magic wands to help the transformation! I hope you have thawed out and are able to enjoy a restful few days - is that ever possible? I have just been out with the dog - still can't manage more than a mile and a half, and that is pushing it, thanks to the deep bruising - what an old crock!!

  8. And I am thankful I have not been sick in years, in spite of inhaling the germs of family, friends and strangers. I hope you are perfect again, soon, in your sparkling kitchen. That is our plan for today--return all to its former self.

  9. Happy New Year. I hear you about having enough of people, especially those coughing & sneezing but insisting they are fine - my thoughts run to stay home, keep away, be gone! I'm sure with a few days of quiet solitude my attitude will improve. OH how I would enjoy a slice or two of that freshly made bread ...

The bread is in the post, I hope it arrives in good shape... Grandchildren are delightful little germ factories, that is for sure! Ah well, the hugs and cuddles were wonderful at the time.

  10. Happy New Year to you Elaine. Sounds like Roast Fox sarnies are a real treat for some!

I hope you are able to rest up now and shake that cold off. Such wee beasties are best shooed out the back door a.s.a.p.. Looking forward to your posts in 2019.

I have dodged quite a few of their colds, one was bound to get me at some point, darn it! Given the speed that those sarnies disappeared, they must have been good. When I spoke to little Gable yesterday he said something about 'snake', I must get reading the Gruffalo again, mug up on what else I may be expected to conjure up!

Rest assured, the very handsome red fox who lives just a couple of fields away is quite safe from me! From what my little grandson said yesterday, snake sandwiches will be called for next time...

He stared at me, his beautiful eyes (which haven't made their mind up yet about whether they are going to be very dark brown or dark blue) but which have that old wise baby look as though they have been here before! Snuggly and deliciously baby scented, Henny.
