Only Minor Damage this Time

Last night Storm Isha battered the country,  It was blowing in from the far corner of Owl Wood so, to some extent, we were relatively protected.  The conservatory took the full force and one of the gutters will need to be fixed but, other than that, the house seems to have weathered it well.

The original log store didn't, as all the roofing felt was blasted off and ended up in great black heaps in the gardens.  However, given that the log store has a definite tilt and needs to be repaired anyway, I think we were lucky.

The hard work we did in the woodland and gardens, pollarding some of the trees and removing the dead and dying ones, seems to have paid dividends.  Apart from a few fallen branches, there was no damage there either.

I hope you were all as lucky.

Checking back through my original blog (such a useful place of reference) I found that the last time the log store felting needed to be replaced was a decade ago.

Jonny and Mingming were kind enough to climb the ladders and do the repairs when they were home that summer.

I love this photograph as it reminds me of long summer days and a prolific vegetable garden.  We must make more of an effort this year!  We used to grow so much more, as this photograph reminds me.

Where did that decade go?

  1. That is a very artistic photo. They children did a good job if it lasted a decade.
We are having gale force winds too but not quite as strong as yours methinks. The sun will be out tomorrow.

    1. It is dull and gusty here, not nearly as cold as it was last week, but then it is still winter.
That old log store is probably going to be reduced in height, chopped down to about half-way, then it can live on another couple of decades, I hope! I also hope that your weather is soon just the way you like it.

  2. I'm thinking that one benefit of living in a bungalow is that it never feels so windy as upstairs in a house.
Hope you get the log store fixed before the next gale blows in - perhaps Isha was the last of the winter

    1. Definitely a benefit - we used to live in a 3 storey house along the seafront - we were constantly losing tiles off the roof. Parsonage Cottage is, in fact, the old cow/stable/cart shed to the farmhouse our daughter lives in. Very long and relatively low, always a good feeling in a storm. It sort of hunkers down. Alas! We now have storm Jocelyn to look forward to.

    1. I seem to just blink and another year has gone, Billy. Enjoyably spent, but gone too quickly. I was going to say that perhaps it is because we no longer have to get up for work a five day week but that can't be it, because I still do 'work' five days a week getting the grandchildren fed and out on time for their school bus and then having a hot meal ready to greet them, etc. So, to some extent, I still have that structure. It must just be down to aging!

  4. A lovely photo of those two. Decades just slip by now, don't they.

    1. Hello Joanne, It is when I delve back into the old Pear Tree Log blog posts that it really hits home just how people have come, or gone, and places have changed, not to mention all the dogs, cats, hens and horses I have been lucky enough to care for during those decades. Our old blogs are like virtual ragbags, filled with small snippets of our lives.
