Village Hall Sprouts

Yesterday afternoon the village hall was buzzing with music and conversation.
It was the monthly get together of some of the village elders.
One of our number had brought along heaps of music books,
 a long sheet of questions
 and
 a mountain of small prizes.

She treated us to an hour and a half of fun, with songs and music which she had carefully selected.  There were songs from the days of the music halls, with early musicals right the way through to more recent hits.

She had thoughtfully provided us with cushions,
pens and paper, ready to note down our answers.
Easy to tell that she is a retired teacher!

I sneaked a couple of quick photographs, here you can see a retired business man - a wonderful local historian, a retired teacher, a retired farmer, Miss Read, retired teacher,
and the wife of the village 'Squire'.

It was tea break time,
with an excellent cake provided by Miss Read.

While we were relaxing, we also took the opportunity to discuss the feasibility of holding a Christmas Bazaar this year.     Two of our main sponsors have decided to move away from the village, we will miss them but, after discussion, we decided that we are still going to make it happen!

As for the tin of Brussels Sprouts, that came out as a booby prize in the quiz.

The tin is several years out of date, it has been lurking at the back of someone's pantry for about four years now -  it is to be wrapped and used as a 'guess-what-is-in-the-parcel' type of game.
Games like that are always popular so it will raise a few pounds.

There will be bric a brac, a huge tombola stall, books, games and the usual raffle and refreshments.

We have two and a half months to work it all out, at least there will be a team of silver-tops working hard to make it happen.

We'll show those young ones!

(Apologies for the slow replies and lack of blog visits.   I am feeling very tired at the moment, swimming through treacle is what life feels like at the moment,
energy levels are low, but it will pass.)

  1. Sorry to hear you are not at your best, hope you feel better soon. Love the idea of wrapping the tin of sprouts, that should be fun.

  2. Hooray for a lovely meeting! And for having enough "wish-to-participate", to plan a Christmas Bazaar!

You have been through a house-change-time, which would wear anyone out. And then a lovely (but tiring) family visit, right on the heels of the house disruption. All this, just after a quite hot summer season. No wonder you are not feeling up-to-par.

Please listen to your body. To not rest, at such a time, is to invite a "winter-coming bug"... And no one wants to do that.

You have said you are not feeling up-to-par. Now forget the additional blogging things.<----"Luna" sezzzzzzzzzzzzz. :-)))

    1. Thanks, Luna. I am feeling much better today, I took plenty of rest - as advised!

The bazaar has been an event for so long (decades) that it would be a shame if it were to end as well. At least there is a group of us to make it happen!

  3. Do you think the sprouts should come with a health warning! :-)

I hope plans for the Christmas Bazaar go well with plenty of help and it sounds like a good afternoon was had by all

    1. The sprouts will only leave the village hall in a bin! The prize will be something much nicer - well, slightly nicer. I think most of us really only turn out to make it a nice afternoon for Miss Read - but we had fun anyway!!

    1. You help would be warmly received, Linda! Grandchildren morning and afternoon, I just need to get back into my stride again. I have taken a lot of rest in the last couple of days and I feel a lot better for it.

  5. Glad you made it to the meeting and helped with planning despite your energy level. You must be on overload what with the renovations just completed and then all your entertaining. Would love to come to your bazaar but don't think we will be traveling across the pond to join you. Next trip like that is Oct 2019 when we head to Spain.

    1. Thanks, Marcia. I am so used to whizzing around like a mad thing, I forget that I am getting older and need to pace myself...lesson learned, until the next time!
Spain should be fun, it is always nice to have something lovely to look forward to.

  6. Now that tin reminds me of the tin of baked beans we found in the cupboard my mum used for storing tins. We cleared it out after she died and found ths tin of beand that looked like a rugby ball, the beans in the tin had rotted an turned to gas causing the tin to expand ithad been in the cupboard so long. We soon dumped them rather than risk them exploding. That tin of yours does not look like it would last long bing it is a ringpull

    1. It is not quite at that point, but they certainly won't be edible, their sole function is to be wrapped and used in a guessing game. I almost feel that the prize should be sprouts on a stalk, but that would be a bit mean!

    1. Thanks, Joanne. Hopefully it will be fun and festive - and over well before we all get too busy with preparations for the holidays.

    1. Thank you, Chrissie. I feel so much better today after lots of rest. It feels dreadfully lazy to stay around the house like this, but it does help! The hall will come alive for a few hours that afternoon and people will at least have a chance to chat to their neighbours.

  9. I note that the tin is French; it demonstrates their traditional attitude towards Sprouts. They're slowly getting better.

    1. None of us had ever come across tinned sprouts before, the very idea seems crazy, but there you are! They are not my favourite vegetable but, fresh from the farm, they can be delicious. Which reminds me, I'd better get mine cooking now or they won't be ready for Christmas...
