Something about a Soldier

(Step by step instructions to come, in another post.)

The weather has been breezy, but mild, perfect for some long walks with the dog.  Down through the farmyard and out into the Wild Wood.   Long hours of work sewing, knitting, and painting, mean that these walks provide an opportunity for some exercise and much needed fresh air.

Crispy crunchy leaves underfoot, glowing red rosehips in the hedgerows, all help to add texture and beauty.     The walks work some magic and I set to with renewed enthusiasm.

I am still having fun making the peg dolls, so there will be a few more yet.

A bit of work with a drill and some dowling, in order to make hats for my peg doll soldiers, then out with the paints and brushes - and we have some cute little soldiers.   They are not quite finished, but almost there.

Did I mention that I get bored easily?   Variety keeps me happy and productive.

I hope you are having a good week, everyone.

Don't forget to have a look at the moon, it is looking quite spectacular this evening.

  1. What a gorgeous and big photo, from your walk!!!

And you continue to churn-out such cute things, for the "Coming Sale Of Miscellany". (I found that alternative to 'bazaar' and fell in love with it.)

It just seems that making the same, same, same thing, over and over and over, would bore one to death. So I don't think you get bored. I think you are wise, to vary, what you are making.

Oh yes, Oct. 24th is the Full Hunter's Moon!!!!! Which gave enough night-light, for the Native American Indians, to hunt for game... To add to their food stores, for the coming Winter. Hope I will be able to see it!

    1. Sale of Miscellany, I like that!

The moon was magnificent last night - I had great opportunity to observe it, as I waited outside for Toby to 'stretch his legs' - several times.

My grandson came in as I was making the soldiers - he has pre-ordered four of them, along with two of the peg dolls and a couple of fairies...that is probably his gift list ticked off nicely. I must up my production rate.

  2. I fancy a tremendous commotion and nightly goings on happen when you slumber with all the dolls and snowmen and soldiers...could be quite some party! x

  3. I watched the moon set one early morning this week when I had trouble getting back to sleep. It was neat to see.
Your crafting looks like so much fun too. My crafting consists of card making mostly though I have a stool that needs to be finished decoupaging and the beginnings of a vest I'm crocheting. Oh, there's also a zentangle project. Hmm, now that I write all that I guess I'm doing more than I thought.

    1. It sounds as though you have your hands full on the craft front, Marcia. What a nicely varied lot of projects, something for every mood, I should think! (I had to look up zentangle.)

  4. Those soldiers look wonderful! What sort of paint do you use? Could you give instructions please?

    1. Absolutely! I will work on a step-by-step post for you. The hat is the 'difficult' part, but there are ways round that, other than that it is simply a case of painting them. I use acrylics, they dry quickly, have brilliant colours, and are long lasting.

  8. Oh, those peg doll soldiers are a delight! What a steady hand you have to have to get their uniforms and features so precise, I love them!
What a glorious sunset last night? I hope it was a lovely where you are? And the moon looked huge above the sea (our view now obscured quite a lot because neighbour next door needs to get his hedge cut - I have to now stand on tiptoe to catch a glimpse of the sea.)

    1. I'll pop around with my hedge trimmer, that will fix it!
Thanks, Margaret, they are great fun . It never fails to amaze me just what can be made from a wooden peg and a bit of paint!

  9. My goodness what a delight to visit today and see your wonderful creations, those soldiers were amazing.
Yes peat is still burnt here, the smell around the village as the temperatures drop is a joy. Our cottage has peat rights but we haven't dug ours, as I am sure you know it is hard work and we weren't up to it so we are burning logs.

    1. I remember that smell so well. We used to go and dig the peat - jolly hard work, as was all the turning and stacking! Log fires are not a bad substitute - they really cheer the place up.

  10. Your peg men and women are lovely, your imagination too. I wish I could go back to creativity. Sadly the mind and fingers don't seem to want to work together.

  13. I so agree about mixing up what you do - a nice walk in the fresh air, enjoying nature, followed by some creative hobbies inside, such as your lovely craftwork, gives balance and refreshment. Variety is the spice of life, as they say!

    1. It most certainly is, Jacqui. The colours of autumn and the crispy, crunching leaves always delight. I hope to read that you have been out and about with your camera.

  14. I wish we could get those wooden pegs. Everything is plastic around here and crumbles after a summer in the sun. I love your artistry. The soldiers are delightful.
Didn't see the full moon, it was cloudy and drizzling. Doesn't happen very often!

    1. If you would like me to send you some pegs, just say the word, Linda. I use plastic ones on the line, but then we don't often have extremes of heat. Shame about the moon!
