On My Knees

It was a misty mellow morning, more suited to autumn than Spring.   Pleasant enough for walking the dog though, so I headed along the primrose strewn old railway line.

All was well until I reached the end of the cleared stretch, the next bit is full of what has grown in the many decades since the railway cuts and the removal of the track.     I intended to go down the grassy bank and into Farmer B's field so that I could take the gentle stroll along to the Wild Wood...

I took a tumble, one of those stupid, slow-motion ones, falling onto  my hands and knees,  down the slope and into the mud.       I felt like an idiot.      Mud on my hands, mud on my knees and my chin.   I got up and felt fine, just stupid.

The dog was still at the top of the slope, grinning.

I cut our walk short.     I wanted to get home to put arnica on my back, the last thing I need is a replay of the pain from a few weeks ago.      My back feels stiff, muscles jarred, but so far so good.

I am beginning to think I'm not safe to be out on my own.   😢

  1. Oh, I hope you didn't do damage to the healing back. I have been using arnica on my right hand. I have thumb troubles but did something to the right thumb the night before we flew home. May have been lifting the suitcase. I go on Wednesday to the doctor. Typing doesn't bother it but lifting heavy things, twisting to open lids, etc does. Not good to get old.

    1. Hello Marcia, I hope your thumb problem is quickly resolved. I've just been reading about your holiday, it sounds like you had a great time. I don't mind about getting older, it is just all the aches and pains which go with it! Arnica is a great help, my back is a bit sore, but not nearly as bad as I feared.

  2. So glad you didn't hurt yourself, apart from feeling silly. I once took a tumble in the mud at the Snape Maltings, and then (with husband who also took a tumble trying to save me) we had to go into a concert stinking of river sludge and looking very dirty indeed!

    1. Hello Margaret, Oh, dear! You always look so beautifully presented - sludge is definitely not one of your colours though! I hope you both enjoyed the concert, despite the muddy prelude. I was very glad that only the dog witnessed my trip!

  3. I hope your bruises aren't too bad. Look after yourself. The mist (it was definitely a fog here) came as rather a surprise to me.

    1. Hello Frugally challenged, We have drenching rain today, definitely not an April shower. I think the quick and repeated applications of arnica have really helped. I feel achy, but my muscles didn't go into spasms last night and that is what I was afraid of. Thanks for your good wishes, they are appreciated.

  4. Oh dear! At least there was only the dog to see the tumble. Hope next morning you're feeling better

    1. Hello Linda, How are your bruises doing? We always keep a big pot of arnica gel in the medicine cupboard. We buy it from the saddler's, it is really for horses, but it works brilliantly on humans, too. Just recently I have gone through quite a lot of it...

  5. I know me...I'd blame my shoes. But saying that it might help to get some runners that have a lot of support for the ankle.

    1. Hello Deb, Good advice! The ground around here was boggy because of rain, so I had my Wellington's on, no walk off-road today because the rain is pouring down in torrents. So far Toby has refused to go outside - he really hates rain/water! I need to rethink my footwear for when the weather is drier and milder, good support would help.

  6. At least you did not do what I did and fall in a muddy pond.

  7. I am so sorry...........

"I am beginning to think I'm not safe to be out on my own."

Perhaps, although you may resist the possibility, could you consider, that for now, at least..... You would be wise to stick to cleared paths? Perhaps later, when it is not so muddy and slippery and etc., perhaps then, you could try venturing a bit farther afield?

Some don't like it, but..... With age, come some limitations. And before we really injure ourselves, it might be wise, to think calmly about them, and decide to make some logical changes.

See, I did this, quite easily, some time ago. Luckily, these decisions came quite easily to me. But!!!! My husband is 4 years older than I, and he is stillllllll trying to come to terms, with this general issue. -sigh- He is learning. He is trying to be wise. But now and then, it does get so hard for him.

Please think on this... :-) Your so-called-gut-feelings will tell you, what is best for you. (Wish there was a nicer term than "gut" feelings, but it does seem to say-it-best.)

    1. You are absolutely right Luna. I have put my thoughts about it, on the back burner for now. My sensible side knows that what you say is very good sense (and almost certainly what I shall have to do) if I don't want to be a 'danger' to myself. The other side of me hasn't quite agreed yet, I'll let it sit and simmer for day or two - less chance of rebellion that way!
Thank you, I really do appreciate it. x
