Sun Warmed

The Beast from the East is blasting the back of the house, determined  to  try and find a way in around the edges of the boot room door.

Several small falls of snow have magically transformed the garden from winter-ugly to white and lovely.    There's still not enough snow to make a snowman though, darn it.

The animals all had to be 'encouraged' to go outside this morning as  they took one peep at the strange white stuff then leaped back into the room.     Now all three are vying for prime position in front of the log burner.

There is a big pan of soup simmering on the Rayburn and we have bread which I baked yesterday.     My husband has been chopping logs and refilling the log and kindling stores.    Most importantly I have plenty of cat and dog food in the pantry, so they won't resort to eating us.   I think we'll survive.

Why does this country go into full panic mode over a few snowflakes?  We must be quite a laughing stock.

I am dreaming of milder weather and sun-warmed produce from the garden.   Instead of the snow-scene photographs I took this morning, here's a photograph I took last summer.

Summer days when we eat according to what is ripe and ready in the garden and the poly tunnel.

Much nicer than enduring icy fingers as I try to pull up a few leeks, from the frozen earth,  for a simple pot of soup.

Roll on those days of sunshine, warmth, and home-grown food.

  1. Makes you wonder how we survived the winter of 1963, that went on for over 2 months

  2. I'm sure we carried on walking back and forward to primary school - half a mile each way all through the big freeze of 1963.
Bit of snow here on and off - not laying

  3. We were made of sterner stuff! These days it seems to become almost a national emergency at the first hint of winter weather.

  4. Yes please - roll on spring. It's not only the cats that have to be encouraged to go outside. I do as well. Love that picture of your basket of veggies.

    1. Hello Molly, Once we get through February we can look forward to lambs and daffodils and, perhaps, a whiff of milder air. Something to keep us going and to lift our spirits. Have you kept up your knitting?

  5. It seems winter has returned to the UK, from what I am reading in blogs.

Here, it is quite warm, and some people are getting carried away. Like shorts, no sweater or coat... Way too soon to get accustomed to this.

We are all entering the season of "Mother Nature is very confused!" I think. Just have to deal with it.

    1. Whereas here we are being treated to a cold spell, but then it is winter! The media is full of dire warnings and fearful predictions, people are scurrying about emptying supermarket shelves and hunkering down. A few decades ago this was just normal winter weather!!
No sweater or coat sounds lovely, bring on spring with frolicking lambs and hosts of daffodils and bluebells, birds nesting, lilac blooming... A girl can dream!

  6. I have to admit I did snicker a bit at the preparations for an unexpected snow-fall. I guess being Canadian, if we can still keep our head above the snow while we make our way to the snow-blower it's just another winter day to us. We have just finished our 4th month of dumping snow and even October last year brought snow and ice. It's.been.awful. Today the sun is shining, we are above seasonal temperatures and everyone is giddy. I found a crocus peaking through the ground at our bird feeders. Your basket of fresh veggies is like candy to the eyes. :) Deb

    1. The whole country would come to a standstill if we had all of your weather to contend with - but then, to be fair, such weather is a rarity here. Nevertheless, we need to develop a bit more of the old resilience. I haven't been on IG for ages, how is your new house coming along?

    2. Very slow with all the ice and snow but moving forward. The electrical and plumbing wasn't anything pretty to photograph but it's so nice to see it done. I will post soon when the ice is gone. It's treacherous around here. We are starting to have spring-like weather finally; sun and warmer temps. :)
