Mapping my Way

The weather is foul.   It is an afternoon for staying in by the crackling log fire and keeping warm while the wild wind hurls rain at the windows and moans down the chimney.

I am amusing myself by roughing out a (very inaccurate and not to scale) map of some of the highlights of my normal walking territory, another one for my Owl Wood Journal.

I'm keeping one eye on the amazing figure skaters at the Winter Olympics, fabulous stuff.

Everything is very low key today.   Our semi-feral cat, Sparky, the black and white one, went out this morning as normal.   An hour and a half later she limped in, obviously in pain, and hid herself out of reach.    The feral part comes out in times of stress, but at least she has come home.

We left her for an hour or so, during that time she got herself into her basket and had a wash.     I have had a quick appraisal and a gentle feel around; it is her back left leg, there is no blood and very little swelling.     Right now she is sleeping.    Later I'll examine her more thoroughly.

Fingers crossed it is nothing more than a sprain.

  1. Sorry for your weather, but glad for your opportunity to make maps. I love such maps. Like "Hundred Acre Wood" maps. :-)

I love home layouts, and area layouts, which maps are. Guess I want to be able to orient myself. And yet, I have terrible personal orientation skills!

In my head, South is South, and nothing will make that change. Meaning, as I sit here, I know where N. S. E. and W. are. When I move to another location, _that_ stays in my mind. Even though I obviously did twists and turns, getting to the new area.

LOL. Clear as mud! Thank you for the map, anyway!

Poor kitty. Do hope it doesn't happen to be worse. None of them like a trip to the vet.

    1. When I drew the map, I drew it as I see it from my start point, hence the strange orientation. The lie of the land is very misleading here, lots of bends and twists, rise and fall, luckily the dog and I know the tracks which lead home!
Sounds like you would make a great homing pigeon, Luna!

  2. That is an amazing map. Will be pretty in your journal. I hope Sparky is okay. Cats are funny, especially the not so tame ones. Our Bickett would never let me examine his leg, or anything else. He would bite me.

    1. Fingers crossed she will be ok. She has had some food, a wash, and even scratched her ear with her 'bad' foot, but she doesn't want to get out of her basket. I'll give her another hour or two and then we'll try to take a proper look. She is a bit of a wild child, just like your Bickett. I am really getting into the whittling, Henny. It is very enjoyable and I love the results.

  4. Not a bad go at drawing a map, I could pick parts up on an OS map quite easy though not so much with Google maps as it is a bit basic. So how does it compare with Google Earth. Think it's quite impressive

    1. I had a couple of attempts, then I decided to use the old railway line as an anchor point, I kept rambling off the page and sticking too much detail in, then I had to erase and squish things in. It is my walking routes, as they are lodged in my brain, definitely not os standard! It was great fun though.

  5. Great map drawing. Now where are you located on that map? I see the mysterious manor house you have been visiting and searching for answers to.

    1. I deliberately didn't name our place on the map, though it is on there, Marcia. Yes, the top right corner shows the empty old manor house, it almost fell off the edge of the page and had to be squished in. It was an interesting little exercise and great fun.
